After School Reading

An educational after school program for 1st–3rd graders

The ability to read is crucial.

In grades one through three, students learn to read, but, once they enter fourth grade, they read in order to learn everything else. Casa del Lago’s After School Reading Program provides high-quality reading intervention to students in first through third grade who struggle in reading so that they can be equipped to read at grade level and thrive in school.

77.3% of 3rd graders are not reading at grade level in our neighborhood.

In After School, students receive intervention in small groups of six, and they rotate through three stations focused on:

  • Reading comprehension and foundational phonics,

  • Christ-centered Bible teaching and crafts, and

  • Homework help.

In addition to these classes, students also receive a free meal, get to play games, and develop important skills. We believe our support can significantly impact students’ literacy skills and their overall wellbeing. After School Reading focuses on elementary literacy, but we also prioritize play, creativity, and most importantly, sharing the Gospel.

Last year, 92.9% of After School students showed reading improvement.
