Summer at the Lake
An elementary summer reading camp
During the summer, students who do not practice reading typically experience “the summer slide” and lose about two months of learning. This means that they start the next school grade already behind in reading. To prevent this learning loss, we created “Summer at the Lake.”
What is the “Summer Slide”?
We provide a variety of reading enrichment to elementary students who have finished grades K–5, so that they maintain their reading skills over the summer. In the five weeks of camp in summer 2024, 93% of the students who were assessed at the end of camp did not experience “the summer slide” in reading!
We focus on Reading
We teach Bible class at summer camp to provide a faithful and grounded foundation for children, because we believe there is no greater hope than Jesus Christ. We teach, sing, and say God’s Word so that children’s hearts might be softened to the Gospel. Our hope is that through the seeds we plant over summer, this approach fosters discipleship that permeates every aspect of their lives.
We proclaim hope
We offer weekly swim lessons (provided by a local YMCA) and recreational games, as well as two exciting field trips. Children gain safety skills, create and build during crafts, explore the world on different adventures, and move their bodies.
We have a lot of Fun
Summer Youth Corps
A fun summer job for responsible and compassionate high schoolers seeking to serve the children of their community.
Summer at the Lake camp would not be possible without the help of the Summer Youth Corps. Casa del Lago hires high school youth aged 14–18 years old to serve as the counselors for the Summer Reading Camp. They will each have their own small group of children and work alongside a multicultural group of their peers as they guide kids throughout camp activities. Applications open early spring.
